General FAQs
-
Please check with the local Korean consulate in your country/region. Currently, Korea has passport only travel arrangements with many countries, including the U.S., that allow travel to Korea for up to 90-days without requiring a visa.
-
Please inquire about traveler's insurance either through a travel agency or through the online service where you purchased your plane ticket.
-
It depends on where you live. We recommend that you check online outlets to find the best route from your home location to Korea.
Please note that you will be arriving at least one day later than you depart due to the time difference. Your confirmation email and pre-departure packet will provide some details to consider, as well.
As always, for any specific inquiries, please contact us at kobo.bonsai@gmail.com
-
Please bring only one (1) checked suitcase and one (1) carry-on item.
Also, luggage is generally cheap to purchase in Korea, so you may consider traveling on the tour itself with just a carry-on. You will be able to purchase an additional bag if needed for items purchased on the tour.
Also, please check with your airline regarding baggage and handling fees.
-
You can arrive anytime, but keep in mind the Incheon International Airport is about an hour from our hotel in Seoul.
Generally, flights leave the U.S. in the morning on the day of departure and arrive in Korea the following afternoon between 2-4p; these are the most convenient flights.
Your guide will be at the airport the evening prior to the tour start date for travel assistance to the hotel. For those that have other arrival times or delays, etc. there will be detailed instructions on travel from the ICN airport to the hotel.
As always, for any special requests please contact us at kobo.bonsai@gmail.com
-
For ease of travel it will be best to arrive at the Incheon International Airport (ICN). For departure, you can utilize either ICN or the new Daegu International Airport.
-
Please consult your cell phone provider in your home country first to see if you can add international roaming service to your phone. Another convenient alternative is an eSIM. Also, Korea has wifi coverage throughout the entire country, and it is often convenient to utilize internet communication apps without the added cost of text and cell phone service providers.
-
This depends on how much you expect to purchase regarding souvenirs and additional food. Korea is a cash-oriented society, so we recommend you bring at least $300 USD (about 450,000 won (KRW)) in cash on hand upon arrival in order to travel comfortably immediately upon arrival to Korea (there are currency exchange kiosks available in the Incheon (ICN) airport).
This being said, ATMs with foreign card withdrawal are available, and many places increasingly accept card payment.
-
Korea has four fantastic seasons. The trips are intentionally planned for peak spring blooms and peak fall foliage. Due to the fluctuating weather during these seasons, appropriate clothing should be worn. With the potential for colder mornings and evenings, we recommend bringing a combination of layered sweaters/jacket, and long pants.
Also, bring comfortable walking shoes and a rain jacket!
Please check the weather and be prepared based on the predicted forecast.
-
No, you can wear casual clothes for the duration of the tour; however, be sure to bring seasonally appropriate attire.
-
Eating is the primary motivation for most social interactions in Korea and restaurants are everywhere.
Unlike Japan, food is reasonably priced. Generally, hotels in Korea do NOT offer any included meals, but you can find good breakfast foods in the hotel lobby, the multitude of coffee shops that dot the streets (Korea has the highest number of coffee shops per capita in the world), and at convenience stores.
Your tour packet will include walkable and short-trip lunch dining areas. Almost all Korean restaurants have a photo or display menu outside, so you will be able to see what you will be ordering. Because this is a smaller tour group, most places will be able to seat our entire group, or we can at least travel to the same location and split up to various restaurants in the same area.
Most meals will be a mix of Korean local cuisine, with Western options available.
All dinners will be included in the tour (see itinerary).
-
No, you should not tip under any circumstances, including at restaurants or in taxis.
-
Gift-giving is a significant part of Korean culture. However, it is not necessary for you to bring gifts for tour visits; if you insist on bring gifts, small items are best.

Yes. Any traveler under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. There will be quite a bit of walking, however, there is also enough down-time for resting and adapting your free time to fit your family’s needs.
-
Somewhat. Although most itinerary stops permit direct vehicle drop-off on flat or accessible terrain, several locations and experiences are on uneven, rocky, or inaccessible areas.
While the hiking trails are often paved, the stone paths at palaces and temples, as well as the small spaces in most restaurants are unaccommodating for guest with mobility restrictions. Wheelchair or scooter use is especially challenging.
The open-time itinerary for Bonsai Discovery: Korea, however, is highly adaptable, and we encourage anyone who would like to join us to contact us at kobo.bonsai@gmail.com regarding any specific needs, requests, or adaptive itinerary for case-by-case consideration.
-

There are limited opportunities to ship trees home from South Korea due to shipping regulations and quarantines. If you are interested, please review APHIS regulations and be in compliance.
Komorebi Bonsai will NOT be able to ship trees on behalf of tour members and will not be liable for any personal packing decisions by participants.
